I went on a first date recently, and left it feeling frankly kinda icky.

I usually enjoy myself on a first date, even if I know within minutes that I will never see the person again. I am naturally curious about people and what wakes them up at night, so I perceive dates as a fun way to understand how someone is a whole walking world unto themselves.

Very quickly I remembered how the flow of good conversation lies not just in asking good questions that opens doors - but also the sharing of yourself and what you reveal about who you are.

A neutral question can be taken as a conversation starter, an attack, or a deepening into something more alive.

I was talking to a Gemini rising who embodies the art of asking really great questions, and we spoke about how it can literally feel like you’re pulling teeth when you ask a question, the person responds in a way that essentially peters out the convo with no follow up question, no back and forth, no further generating of energy between the two of you.

The conversation falters.

As they say, it takes two to tango.

You learn to move on gracefully. I’ve learned to not take it personally. Sometimes the synergy simply isn’t there. Sometimes I really cannot be bothered. With Mercury right on my Descendant, I’ve learned that the art of “small talk” builds trust between two people. Rapport is simply crossing the bridge from here to there so you can both begin to open like a flower. Some days it bores me to tears, but I have a dogged kind of persistence in finding something interesting about each person I encounter, or about a moment they are living through.

Mercury knows the art of conversation through curiosity. Inquisitiveness is a skill you hone because it is one key to opening up new burrows, new rabbit holes, new neural pathways of unforeseen possibilities.
