A few weeks ago, I ate a spherical sugar coated doughnut.

It was incredible.

Later I found it was called a bomboloni, filed under ‘things I’m still discovering about the world’.

I raved about it, then promptly forgot about the bomboloni I ate.

Then last week I receive a photo of a menu with bomboloni circled in red, someone trying to prove to me they’re everywhere!, surprised I had never come across one before.

The next day, I take myself out for bomboloni and a coffee, my fingers dusted with sugar and cheeks wet, moved by lines on beauty in John O'Donohue's Divine Beauty, like:

‘every life is braided with luminous moments’

Clues, clues, clues.

Look for the ones you want.

Look for what you crave.

Look for what you're hungry for.

Look for what you feel like today.

Look for what nurtures you, even if superficial, so your body remembers what it feels like to take something in.

To inhale, to receive, to savour, to swallow, to allow in.

On the solstice on Sunday, we gathered in a ginhawa circle and something we played with was recalling a time where you offered care to someone and it actually felt good, like it nourished your insides in turn.

When care felt less like duty and obligation and more like a sip of warm water with a hint of mint - refreshing and warming.

To realise that you are being altered from an encounter, even if you believe you are the one offering sugar and coffee and a good time.

When your days feel drab and dreary, as it can be wont to feel when winter comes: no romantic snow, no wistful mountains. Just an ordinary day on an ordinary street. Garbage to take out, dinner to cook, laundry to hang up.

Stop hunting for ugliness. You will see it everywhere you go anyway.

Re-ignite the quest for beauty and innocence and love, the taste of things running parallel to what your heart really longs for - in your favourite colour, your favourite fruit, your favourite song.

It is in the blade of grass that you touch and say hello, you are alive too.

And what about the gum tree you walk past everyday, ordinary and common? Today is the day you remember it's sentience and ancient aliveness - rooted, swaying, giving you life.
